Meet the Team

Maine Home Education Alliance Board of Directors

We are unschoolers, classical home educators, parents of both homeschool graduates and little ones, neurotypical and neurodivergent children. Many of us have fought in Augusta on more than one occasion. We are stay-at-home moms, mamas that work part-time, mothers that are the breadwinners and moms that own their own businesses. We are mothers that love Jesus and mothers that identify as secular. We respect and support each other and now we are excited to join forces to support homeschooling families in Maine.

Becky Grant-Widen, President

After 20+ years as a homeschool parent and advocate, coupled with her experience working with several dozen non-profits, Becky co-founded MHEA with Brooke Thompson, another veteran homeschool mom.  The daughter of retired Maine educators, Becky attended the University of Maine at Farmington for Community and School Health Education. Early on in her career she carved a niche for herself in the public health community by focusing on youth education and advocacy around healthy lifestyle choices, and working with youth leaders from all over the state to provide training to teens on using their voices to advocate for legislative policy change. Becky is passionate about self-directed learning and giving young people agency in their education by using a strengths-based approach. Relationships are at the heart of her educational philosophy. Becky currently works as a high school health teacher in the Threshold Program at the Maine Academy of Natural Sciences. In her free time, she enjoys playing volleyball, keeping extensive gardens, digging into her ancestry, traveling, and spending time with her husband Kurt and their three sons, two of whom are homeschool graduates and one who is still actively homeschooling.

Brooke Thompson, Vice-President

Brooke has co-founded three home education cooperatives in Maine and Virginia and one statewide sports league that served 1000+ homeschooled children, over the last 15 years. She sits as President and founder of her current home education community “HAVEN homeschool collective” which has three campuses, serving over 200 children throughout Maine. Her newest project (co-directing with MHEA’s Secretary, Julie Morrison) is “HAVEN HIGH,” a teen-only cooperative focused on experiential learning, outdoor adventures, academic challenge, travel and creating core memories with a strong peer group. Through the years, Brooke has led many home education and parenting workshops and has an extensive background in retreat and event planning.

Residing in Midcoast Maine, Brooke and her husband Patrick, have home educated their six children (ages 5-19) for the last two decades. Their eldest is a homeschool graduate, currently working full time and attending UMaine. Brooke holds a double BA in Communication Arts and Theatre and is also a Clinical Herbalist. She owns The Modern Herbalist, runs a woman-focused private practice and spends time in her organic gardens formulating and selling a skincare line as well as herbal supports at local markets.

Brooke is passionate about protecting home education rights for Maine families, encouraging parents and caregivers to step into their role as educator and loves brainstorming & implementing innovative ways to strengthen Maine’s thriving and diverse home education community. Brooke is honored to use her experience and skillset to co-found MHEA with Becky Grant-Widen (President of MHEA) and collaborate with MHEA’s amazing leadership team.

Shannon Wallace, Secretary

Shannon spent her early childhood in Downeast Maine.  During college and over the following 10 years Shannon returned to central Maine in the summers, working as a camp counselor and then director at a large sleep-away camp. Although there have been many winters and a 6 year stint in New Zealand (her husband's home country) central Maine is where she and her family have called home since 1999.

Shannon graduated from Plymouth State University with a BS in Health Education and a minor in Business Administration and then went on to become an Integrative Health Coach in 2011. Over the years she has worked with Naturopaths and Chiropractors offering Health Coaching programs to their patients.  Shannon worked for Maine General Medical Center from 2014-2019 teaching nutrition to children and adults.  Currently Shannon wears a few hats, working from home as a Health Coach, a virtual office administrator for both a Chiropractic office and a local equestrian lesson and boarding facility and now as a Board Member and Treasurer for MHEA.

Home education wasn’t in the original plan for her family.  Her daughter went to public school from Kindergarten through 4th grade but due to changes in the Maine laws her family needed to consider home education.  They made the decision to start in the fall 2019 and the last 4 years have proven to be the “best decision they never would have considered”.  Shannon is excited to support other families in their home education journeys.

Carolyne Falank

Carolyne fell in love with Maine over 20 years ago when she attended the University of Maine as an undergraduate. Eager to pursue a career in research she chased those dreams while enjoying her life right here in Maine by obtaining a Bachelor’s of Science in Marine Biology from the University of Maine, a Master’s degree in Applied Medical Sciences from the University of Southern Maine and a Doctoral degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Maine. Carolyne has devoted her professional career to advancing Maine’s STEM field while raising a family with her husband in Central Maine.

Carolyne has always been passionate about mentoring and sharing her love for science. Throughout the years she has supported and guided numerous students of all ages, ranging from high-school to medical residency, on developing knowledge and skills in conducting research and pursuing a future within the field of STEM. Most importantly Carolyne enjoys helping others develop their own individual scientific identity, especially to those who do not want to fit within the common stereotypes.

Alongside her scientific career Carolyne has felt called to be a homemaker, homesteader and home educator. After her oldest spent half a year in public kindergarten they decided it was not a good fit for their family and made the transition for her husband to be the stay at home parent. Together they join forces on providing an education to their children alongside supporting other families who are passionate about home education and getting back to their ancestral roots.

In her spare time you can find Carolyne basking in her gardens, preserving food, cooking from scratch, caring for her farm animals and building a self-sufficient life for her family.

Christy Alley

Christy was born and raised in Downeast Maine and never considered living anywhere else. She has been a Jonesport resident since 2007 and grew up in Roque Bluffs. She earned her bachelor’s degrees in psychology and sociology at Bowdoin College and later earned her teacher certification at the University of Maine at Machias. She has been a licensed social worker since 1997, a global career development facilitator since 2012 and has worked as an educational advisor for the last 26 years.  She is currently the Early College Advising and Success Coordinator for the University of Maine System and prior to that was the Early College Director at the University of Maine at Machias and Co-Director at the University of Maine.

Christy has assisted countless homeschool students over the years with choosing college courses and career pathways and their transition to college.  During COVID Christy homeschooled her then 10 year old son and 11 year old niece. This experience allowed her to gain a greater understanding of the homeschooling process, available resources, and challenges faced by homeschool families.

In her spare time Christy enjoys spending time with her husband and 3 children, supporting her children’s various sporting activities, taking pictures, and reading. She is also a volunteer for the Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute.

Julie Morrison, Secretary

Julie is a seasoned home educator, with one graduate and one teen starting high school.  With sons that wanted to enter traditional university engineering programs, Julie learned to balance self-directed, hands-on learning approaches with the demands of pre-engineering requirements.  As such, Julie is passionate about finding opportunities to create community and hands-on learning activities for home educated teens.

Julie is also the President and co-founder of RockStep Solutions, a company focused on cloud informatics solutions for in vivo drug discovery. At RockStep, Julie leads company operations, product management, and product vision and has implemented user-centered research and design practices as a core tenet of the company’s product development strategy.  She has lectured on information management for the life sciences and published thought-leadership articles on data and operations management for the Lab of the Future.

Julie is passionate about planning and leading workshops to facilitate community, collaboration, and growth for organizations, for both nonprofits and businesses.  She works with home educated groups to guide them in vision planning and direction setting.  Whether in the boardroom or the co-op, Julie strives to bring a sense of collaboration and transparency to all her interactions.

Elizabeth Shardlow

Elizabeth is a practicing Maine attorney and homeschooling mother of five. She earned her bachelors degree from the University of Maine at Augusta in just two years while working full-time alongside her husband before going on to earn her J.D. from the University of Maine School of Law.

Elizabeth has been an advocate in children's health for more than a decade, leading policy initiatives and citizen lobbying for informed choice, and helping individuals navigate challenging issues in the healthcare realm. She believes that there is no one right way or one right choice in education; individuals must be free to choose what works best for them, their families, and their unique circumstances.

Elizabeth is passionate about getting parents and youth involved in the legislative process, and she looks forward to empowering home educated youth to help shape the laws which impact us in every element of our lives.   In her spare time, Elizabeth enjoys sewing, trying her hand at just about anything at least once, and is an avid reader of nonfiction.
